Following annual tradition, the Biennale Interieur and the magazines Knack Weekend and Le Vif Weekend choose a Belgian designer of the year. In 2006, the Brussels designer Alain Berteau was the first to receive the title. Numerous talented designers have since succeeded him. The list of laureates has now been supplemented with designers who have also made international breakthroughs. Muller Van Severen, architect Vincent Van Duysen, product developer Alain Gilles, silversmith Nedda El-Asmar. They all contribute to the appearance of Belgian design.
The designer for the year 2019 was announced on 8 October. The great laureate this year is the 32-year-old designer Linde Freya Tangelder. Under the name Destroyers Builders she not only brings her own work, but she makes objects for the Belgian label Valerie Objects and the Italian gallery Nilufar. In a unique way and with a lot of love for the material, she makes various objects and pieces of furniture. You can hear her at work on Sunday 27 October. During the Kortrijk Creativity Week she explains how she works and what the challenges are as a young designer.
